Entrecard : Busted!
Thursday November 29th 2007, 17:55 pm
In the early hours whilst reading through some blogs I discovered Entrecard. Entrecart is the brainchild of Graham Langdom, the creator of The Million Dollar Wiki, for anyone who hasn't heard of him, shame on you! Most Internet Entrepeneurs have ideas, but whether they are good or not remains to be seen because they end up on the back burner. The difference is when this guy has an idea he runs with it and I'd say Entrecard is already shaping up to look like it could be a success.
So what is Entrecard? Simplified, it's a way for you to advertise your blog on other members sites for free by using a digital business card. Advertising is bought using credits which you have to earn. They can be earned by visiting other members sites and "sending them" your digital business card. You also earn credits when people visit your site and send you their business card.
As well as the most obvious benefit (free advertising on sites that would normally cost you cold hard cash) users have to visit other sites to earn credits, this means you will get unique visitors. I think it's safe to assume that a large percentage of the bloggers that sign up will be obsessed with Alexa rankings and will have the Alexa Toolbar installed which can only mean good news for you!
After signing up last night I looked at the system again with fresh eyes, I'd decided it wasn't free, time is money or so they say, and I wanted to earn 250 credits so I could advertise on the 3 most popular sites. Even opening 5 sites at a time and clicking like crazy was taking too long.
I'm very impatient and had become what could only be described as a Credit Whore, I wanted more credits and I wanted them now! After looking at how the system worked I quickly knocked up a script which manipulated the URL to make it appear that I'd visited the members sites. I ran the script and kicked back watching my credits go up around 30 a minute, I remember smiling to myself and feeling I'd accomplished something for the day.
I was happily booking my add space on the other members sites when I noticed on my other screen the friendly message had gone and the reply from the page was "Busted"! There is no worse feeling than getting caught cheating! I sat and cringed for a while, wondering if my account would be deleted.
The advertising I'd bought with my "Stolen" credits was reversed within only a few minutes and I ended up with a negative number of credits. I love the concept of the site, sending traffic to other blogs, free advertising, and the community which you can already see forming on the bulletin boards.
Lesson learned, I promise to behave from now on!! :)

Thanks ever so! You saved me the embarrasment of trying the same thing myself. I love to automate everything, but... if I had, I wouldn't have discovered your kick-ass blog! Btw, you can script a random wait period... no, nevermind! ;->

Uh-oh! that was really naughty. At least, you promised to behave from now on so I\'m gonna accept your entrecard ad in my site.
Bye!

This is the reason why this site will fail. I too am a developer and have discovered many loop holes and many people already cheating the system. How do you think there are people selling 10,000 ec points for $15? I wrote about my experience on my blog and I plan on removing the entrecard ad off my site at the end of the week.

That's ok, you have probably not been the first to try to game the system. Others have flopped since it's inception.

It is very nice of you to have shared this experience. I hope it serves as a warning for anyone who might be thinking of "playing" with the entrecard system. Oh and by the way you have a great blog :)
Cheers!!
PS: Your entrecard is already queued up for display on my site. Just so that you know :)

Life is a learning process. ;)
At least you are a living example to others. :)
And you were able to prove what the system is made of. :)
What matters is the lesson learned...especially if it need not be our own. :)
Happy 2008!

oooooo shame! shame! shame! LOL... well, at least you're still around on there because that's how I managed to find your page! ;-)
Matter of fact, your entrecard is currently displayed on one of my blogs!
Hope to hear from you... Take it easy!

Your dishonesty/honesty is as becoming as your blog. Keep up the good work!

Toni,
That was a killer idea. I wonder if it would work on a smaller scale. Say if you only ran it every several hours and it accrued less credits at a time? I'm sorry you got caught. =)

Nice of you to have share this. It is quite educating as it serves as a warning for anyone who might be thinking of cheating the system. I joined today and I love the concept. You have a great blog too. Cheers
