Saying Goodbye
Thursday January 3rd 2007, 10:25 am
There are quite a lot of things in my life that I need to detach myself from, the less things that preoccupy my time, the more room there will be for making the dream a reality. I've decided it's not just my job I need to sacrifice if I want to make things work, so here's a list of things I plan to give up.
Mates - I know it sounds bad, but I have far too many people in my life I class as mates, not friends, not people I trust, not people I would confide in, just mates. So many of them are exhausting, sucking up time with their emotional problems or always have something negative to say. This year I need people around me with a can-do, anything’s possible, enthusiastic attitude. I plan to work really hard, to do just about anything it takes, so it's only fair that any spare time I have is spent with those closest to me.
In the last few weeks I've become less and less available to these people, I don't spend anywhere near as much time in bars and clubs as I used to. I feel better for it too, I don't miss the late nights, early mornings or vast quantities of Redbull needed to be able to get through the next day.
Video Games - I'd be ashamed to tell you the amount of hours I used to spend playing video games, the worst contender being EQ2. My Illusionist hit the new lvl cap before Xmas so I said farewell to my guild mates last night and uninstalled the game.
I packed up my 360, Wii and PSP then asked a friend to put them up in my loft. The loft is dark, and therefore in my mind, a home for all things creepy and crawly! It's more likely I'd go out and buy new ones than try and sneak them back out.
Websites - I edited the host file on my computer so sites like FaceBook, MySpace, Kongregate all point to a page I made for myself with a flash animation to remind me of my goals for 2008.
This must be what Lent feels like! :)

I feel you man!
I used to spend my time playing Tantra Online. It's a hit MMORPG here in the Philippines. I level up my char up to the maximum now I am trying to replace it with a more profitable habit--blogging.
I'll try to get my own million from the net too. I'm gonna fallow your footstps!

Time is precious and with your goal of 1M...you'll need to use every minute wisely.
Best,

I think the older you get the fewer friends you end up. But they're real friends though.

Video Games can reduce stress =D. You should play it but with control.

Hi! Congrats on the resolutions! Good for you, and your friends & family...
Thanks for choosing to advertise on my blog (e-card), and yay you for bypassing John Chow (again)!

This is really encouraging! I think everyone can relate to these distractions, and it's great you seem to have eliminated them. Hopefully reading this will help me do the same. Maybe.

Great post, I feel the exact same way and recently stopped using Aim and Skype because of the same reasons. Good Luck!

Haha.. this post made me laugh. Thanks for writing it. It's my first visit here and I'm really enjoying your down-to-earth tone and writing style.
Re: editing host file on your computer.
Damn, that's brilliant. You know what would be useful? A program that allows you to access certain sites at pre-determined times and intervals. So it'll be difficult to check email every five minutes. :)
Cheers,
Tina

Great post, and of course best of luck in achieving your goals!
One thing to keep in mind is that you can't trim EVERYTHING back to work only. That will make you seem productive for a short while...but of course, if there aren't important people to share your success (and your troubles) with, then it will be far less rewarding. Take it from someone who has been there! :)
Cheers!

I like how you categorized them as "mates". I'm staying away from those people also. Who do they think we are, emotional shock absorber? :)
Let's make 2008 more productive. Good luck!

I am liking your determination for your new year's resolution. Some pretty good advice that I may have to use for myself... I wish you all the best Toni and keep everyone updated with how things turn out for you...

Toni, I wholeheartedly concur. You must detox from the things holding you back. This has been my mantra for years. I gave up a few things too. I gave up all alcohol, no more drinking for me; I refuse to wear my heals in downtown Washington DC because those streets always wreak havoc on my pumps; I cut loose all my compadres who refused to stop wearing white shoes after Labor Day. I mean that should be a law by now. I was going to give up being so bitchy but that's NOT gonna happen!

Great goals. I had to give up gaming and time sucking friends also. From someone who has lived with those goals for a while, the results are worth it.

Good luck! Annoying distractions and fart-arseing about with facebook are some of the worst ways to spend time online :(

I also have made similar sacrifices, though not for the same reason. It is one of those lifestyle change things that just needs to be done once in a while. I do not think though that I could do without my Wii. Every so often I just need to run off to a land of make believe to regain some sanity.
Good luck with your goals and I wish you every success.

Well, quitting the video game thing is a good thing. I quit because it was sucking up my life... I mean, MY LIFE! LOL...
But hope to see you around more often ;-) Happy New Year!

I also used to be a BIG time gamer at one time. During the summer time, I would play at least 10 hours a day.
Nowadays, I rarely play like I used to, which is a good thing! :)
